What the petition asks
Thousands of lives will be lost due to spending cuts of over £900m to the 2023/24 Overseas Development Assistance budget, according to the Government's 19 July Equality Impact Assessment. To prevent these deaths and many other harms laid out in the assessment, these cuts should be reversed.
Quotes from the government assessment:
South Sudan: “27,000 children suffering from Severe Acute Malnutrition will go untreated, of which 12 per cent (over 3,000) could die."
Yemen: “Half a million women and children in Yemen will not receive healthcare and fewer preventable deaths will be avoided”.
Pan Africa: “number of maternal deaths prevented will drop from 2,531 to just over 1,000”.
We cannot accept that this much preventable death and suffering is justified. The cuts must be reversed.
