Require local authorities to keep publicly funded leisure centres open

What the petition asks
Government to pass a law which makes councils legally responsible for keeping publicly funded leisure centres open. In circumstances where a private contractor can no longer run a publicly funded leisure centre the law should require local authorities to operate this themselves.
It has been reported that Gloucester Leisure Centre's provider Aspire Trust has gone into liquidation, closing the Leisure Centre's doors suddenly and depriving many of its vital services with the reported loss of over 150 jobs. Gloucester City Council has stated that the Centre, GL1 is unlikely to re-open before September 2024, leaving Council tax payers to also pick up the cost of maintaining an empty public building. This should not be allowed to happen.
