What the petition asks
We want the Government to allow people of Chinese heritage to take leave (either paid or unpaid) on the Chinese New Year, in addition to their normal holiday allowance, if they choose to do so.
According to the 2021 Census, the Chinese ethnic group in England and Wales makes up 0.7% of the total population, 445,646 people in 2021. In addition to the Chinese, there are a larger number of Asians that are of Chinese heritage and celebrate Chinese traditions.
However, there is no right to take time off work to respect and observe the cultural custom of Chinese New Year, and we want the Government to give people of Chinese heritage a right to take leave on Chinese New Year.
