What the petition asks

We would like MPs in Parliament to commit to visiting schools and colleges in their constituency to engage with young people, so every young person has the opportunity to meet their local representative before they turn 18.

Voter turnout out and political engagement among young people in the UK is incredibly low. Research undertaken by our youth campaign Politics 4 All suggests only 1 in 5 of the young people surveyed agree with the statement "I have been equipped with the tools and knowledge to be politically literate at school". We would like to improve this by encouraging MPs to visit schools and colleges so young people are at the minimum getting to interact with an elected representative and ask questions.

Why it was rejected

It asked for something that is not the responsibility of the UK Government or Parliament.

We can only accept petitions about things the Government or Parliament are directly responsible for.

Decisions about whether to visit local schools and colleges are a matter for individual MPs, not the UK Government or Parliament.
