Require joint debts be split 50/50 in event of separation

Closed 51 signatures

What the petition asks

If there is an outstanding joint debt, after a relationship break-up, then it should be made that both parties are liable to pay 50/50 each of the debt, rather than each party being responsible for the whole amount.
Where couples have a joint debt, either party can be pursued for the full amount. This can lead to considerable financial hardship. We want rules on debt recovery to be amended, so that following separation each party of a joint debt is only liable for 50% of the total debt.
