Petition

Replace PSHE with citizenship course focusing on political & social literacy

Rejected 14 signatures

What the petition asks

Overhaul the current PSHE curriculum and introduce a compulsory course for secondary school students that establishes fundamental understanding of the following:
- Government functions & elections
- Social institutions
- Taxes, pensions, savings
The central argument around schooling is to prepare our children for their futures. The day the turn 18 they gain a hugely powerful right: to vote. 70% of young people under 18 don't know their MP. 2 in 5 young people don't understand at all what politicians do. Additionally, 76% of teachers believe students do not receive necessary financial education. What's the point of schooling if not to prepare children? Show students how to deal with the realities and responsibilities of the real world.

Why it was rejected

The UK Government or Parliament was already taking the action it asked for.

The key stage 3 and 4 curriculums for Citizenship already include teaching about democracy, government and how laws are made and upheld. You can find out more about this here:

If you would like changes to the current Citizenship curriculum, you could start a petition about that.
