Limit Lord Mayor Tenure to Two Terms
Closed
177 signatures
What the petition asks
Limit the number of terms an individual may serve as Lord Mayor or Mayor to two terms in any local authority by amending existing local government legislation and requiring councils to update their standing orders accordingly.
Currently no statutory maximum prevents repeat appointments.
We believe a two-term cap will:
Broaden representation across political parties, wards and demographics.
Encourage fresh leadership and new ideas.
Safeguard institutional integrity by preventing undue influence
We call on the Government to draft and enact the necessary legislation at the earliest opportunity and to issue guidance for local authorities so this term limit can take effect at the start of the next municipal year.
