Petition
Scrap interest on all student loan repayments

What the petition asks
We are calling on the government to remove interest from student loan repayments. Graduates are charged interest of up to 3% above inflation, meaning they repay far more than borrowed. This creates a ‘graduate tax’, leaving many in debt for 30 yrs & making this far more expensive than original cost.
Student loan interest means graduates often repay far more than they originally borrowed. With interest charged at up to 3% above inflation (currently around 7% total), a typical 3-year degree costing ~£27,000 can grow to over £40,000 in real debt before repayment even begins. Many people remain in debt for 30 years despite regular payments. Removing interest would make repayments fairer and reduce long-term financial strain.
