What the petition asks
We want the Government to update food labelling laws to add peas, lentils and chickpeas to the major allergen list. These ingredients are increasingly used in foods and can cause severe allergic reactions. They should be clearly highlighted in bold on labels and menus to improve safety.
There is evidence that allergies to peas, lentils and chickpeas are increasing, particularly in children. These ingredients are widely used in plant-based and processed foods but are not required to be highlighted like the 14 major allergens. Eating out can be especially difficult and stressful, as these ingredients are often hidden in dishes or menus. Clear bold labelling would help prevent severe reactions, improve transparency and make food choices safer both at home and when dining out.
