Petition

Protect and keep Cash in circulation in the UK in perpetuity.

Rejected 18 signatures

What the petition asks

We call on Parliament to pass an Act prior to any launch of a digital pound or CBC. It is vital for the UK to always have an alternative to digital currency and safeguards should be put in place to ensure our banking system is cash based in perpetuity. Access to cash via banks/ATM's is essential.
Legislation should aim to reflect recent similiar legislation introduced in Switzerland, Hungary and Slovakia with aims to enshrine the availability of cash and the British pound as UK currency in the Constitution. We want to oblige the federal government to ensure that a sufficient quantity of coins and banknotes is always in circulation. Furthermore, replacing the British pound with another currency should only be possible with the consent of the people, full voters input and not via party whips

Why it was rejected

The UK Government or Parliament was already taking the action it asked for.

The Financial Services and Markets Act 2023 protects free access to cash in law. You could submit a new petition with a more specific request to change existing arrangements with respect to access to cash.
