Petition

Align Working Hours, School Schedules, & Family Costs to Support UK Parents

Rejected 11 signatures

What the petition asks

UK families face a mismatch between work hours & school times, forcing costly childcare. Parents, especially mothers & default parents are penalised while education costs like uniforms with logo and meals rise. We call for flexible working, aligned school hours, & limits on school-related costs.
Families, particularly mothers are struggling with a mismatch between standard working hours & school schedules, creating financial strain. Extended childcare options like breakfast & after-school clubs are costly & almost unaffordable. Meanwhile, school essentials, such as uniforms & meals, are increasingly expensive. The Government must act to align school hours with working hours, regulate education-related costs & ensure affordable support for working families, reducing the financial burden.

Why it was rejected

It was not clear what the petition asked the UK Government or Parliament to do.

We can only accept petitions about things the Government or Parliament are directly responsible for. Decisions about working hours are a matter for employers, not the UK Government or Parliament.

Additionally, we can't publish petitions when the request is something that's already happening or something that has been announced since you started your petition. Employees already have a legal right to request flexible working arrangements from their employer from day one of employment. You can find out more here: https://www.gov.uk/flexible-working

There is already statutory guidance for schools on school uniform, including cost, a limit on compulsory branded items and the provision of second-hand uniform. You can find out more here: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/cost-of-school-uniforms/cost-of-school-uniforms

You could start a new petition explaining clearly what you would like the Government or Parliament to do that is different from the existing law and statutory guidance.
