What the petition asks
Current law only allows banning terrorist groups. Organisations can still lawfully campaign to replace democracy with a theocratic or anti-democratic system if non-violent. Introduce legislation to close this gap and protect democratic rights and equal participation for all.
Current law only allows proscription of terrorist organisations. This means groups can lawfully advocate replacing democracy with a theocratic or anti-democratic system if they avoid violence. We believe this risks undermining democratic institutions, parliamentary sovereignty, and equal rights over time. Other democracies have legal safeguards against this. We feel that similar, proportionate powers with judicial oversight are needed in the UK to protect democracy and ensure equal participation for all.
