Reform the local highways maintenance funding formula

What the petition asks
Require the Department for Transport to reform the local highways maintenance funding formula so councils receive road funding based on actual vehicle usage levels per mile.
Current local road maintenance funding is mainly based on the length and category of roads maintained by councils. This is unfair as roads with far higher traffic volumes experience greater wear and deterioration. Areas with heavy commuter, freight and commercial traffic should receive funding that reflects the actual strain placed on their road network. We believe the funding formula should include traffic levels, vehicle miles travelled and heavy vehicle usage alongside road length.
