Petition

Amend the Online Safety Act to cover algorithmic amplification

Rejected 9 signatures

What the petition asks

Platforms that algorithmically curate content should be liable for the harms that content causes. Platforms showing only content from a user's own social graph, in chronological order, are exempt. The government should amend the Online Safety Act 2023 accordingly, with Ofcom as enforcement body.
The Online Safety Act does not protect adults from algorithmically amplified harm, only children. 68% of UK adults have been exposed to potentially harmful content online (Ofcom, 2024). Parliament's own Science, Innovation and Technology Committee has concluded the Act fails to address algorithmic amplification. Platforms that curate what you see are making editorial decisions. Platforms cannot curate for profit and disclaim responsibility for harm. Principle: if you curate, you are responsible.
