Introduce TJ Law: Suspend Parental Rights for evidenced abuse or abandonment

Rejected 12 signatures

What the petition asks

Introduce TJ Law to automatically suspend PR where there is evidence of domestic abuse or child abandonment to protect children from unsafe or absent parents. PR could only be reinstated by a Court if the parent proves rehabilitation, no risk, and that reinstatement is in the child’s best interests.
TJ Law would automatically suspend Parental Responsibility where there is evidence of domestic abuse or child abandonment, creating a Child Abandonment and Abuse Register to support safeguarding and prevent PR being used for coercive control. It would stop PR reviving if the primary caregiving parent dies, reduce pressure on family courts by limiting misuse of PR, and require any parent seeking reinstatement to prove they pose no risk and that reinstatement serves the child’s best interests.

Why it was rejected

There was already a petition about this issue. Duplicates are rejected so signatures collect in one place.

You may wish to sign this petition which calls for a similar action: Automatically remove parental responsibility for parents convicted of abuse

In addition, your petition is about something that the Scottish Government and Scottish Parliament is responsible for, as child abuse and child protection laws are devolved in the UK.
