Ban fashion firms burning clothes and contributing to emissions. Recycle instead

Open for signatures 21 signatures

What the petition asks

This law would ban the burning of used clothing or unsold stock and rather require that big companies opt for recycling schemes instead.
Globally, the equivalent of one garbage truck of textiles is burned or landfilled every second. The UK alone sees 300,000 tonnes of used clothing end up incinerated annually. A YouGov survey for Keep Britain Tidy reports that 79% of adults feel that the UK buys too much stuff. This law would reduce the amount of emissions released due to the burning of used clothes, and would ban the burning of unsold stock if it is able to be recycled. Additionally, it would hopefully discourage excessive buying.
