Petition

Don’t increase the retirement age for 49-55 year olds to 68 years old.

Rejected 14 signatures

What the petition asks

There has been minimal publicity about the government plans to now increase the retirement age for 49 to 55 year olds from 67 to 68 years old. It isn’t fair to keep saueezing working people to pay for a non means tested triple lock pension for people who were allowed to retire far younger.
49 - 55 year olds have spent years planning for retirement based on a state retirement age of 67. There has been minimal publicity about the government plans to increase state pension age for 49-55 year olds to 68. This is inequitable and unrealistic - working people have faced real income pay cuts since the financial crash. The triple lock pension should be means tested to protect pensioners who genuinely need help - why should the government squander billions giving millionaires a triple lock?

Why it was rejected

It was not clear what the petition asked the UK Government or Parliament to do.

We're not sure what you mean by "government plans to now increase the retirement age" as no such Government announcement has been made.

Under the Pensions Act 2007, the state pension age is expected to rise to 68 between 2044 and 2046, affecting those born on or after 6 April 1977.

The government announced the launch of the third review of State Pension age in July 2025, which is required under the Pensions Act 2014. You can find out about the review here: https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/third-state-pension-age-review
