What the petition asks

The Isle of Wight has 140,000 residents who face high costs simply to access the mainland. Ferry travel is essential for healthcare, work, education and family life. We call on Government to introduce resident fare support, recognising the Solent crossing as essential transport infrastructure.

Unlike mainland communities, Isle of Wight residents cannot access the wider UK road network without paying a substantial ferry fare. This creates barriers to employment, healthcare, education, business, tourism and family connections. With a population of around 140,000, the Island is not a small remote community, yet residents receive no equivalent support to address the additional costs created by living on an island county. A fair solution is needed.

Why it was rejected

It was about a matter for a local council or devolved government, not the UK Government or Parliament.
