The motion

That the Parliament endorses the resolution passed by the United Nations General Assembly on 15 June 2007 to observe annually the anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday on 2 October as the International Day of Non-Violence; recognises that the late Indian leader’s novel mode of mass mobilisation and non-violent action greatly influenced other struggles for freedom and inspired leaders like Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King, and reaffirms the commitment of the Scotland branch of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association to share with fellow Commonwealth parliamentarians a desire to secure a culture of peace, tolerance, understanding and non-violence.
