Prospect’s Manifesto for Good Work

That the Parliament welcomes the Manifesto for Good Work, which has been published by the union, Prospect, and aims to address the challenges that its members face in the workplace; understands that these include a deterioration in the quality of lives and rising levels of stress and mental ill-health; commends the manifesto in defining good work as people having secure, interesting and fulfilling jobs; notes that it says that there should be a culture of trust and fairness, a choice and control over hours, open and transparent award structures and a degree of control over the pace of work and environment; understands that the manifesto was developed following consultations with the union's members and alongside dialogue with employers, professional bodies and labour market experts; notes that it aimed to identify the key priorities in improving the workplace; supports its calls for politicians to commit to a good work culture for their staff and to set out their vision of a good workplace; commends the manifesto on recommending the need for future public procurement policies to be reformed by improving supply chain practices, investing in high quality training and skills and having decent working environments; notes that it asks politicians to work with companies and other stakeholders to devise measures of good work and to commit to legislating for works' councils, which might help to promote collaboration and consultation on strategic decisions, and believes that, following the publication of Working Together: Progressive Workplace Policies In Scotland and the announcement of the establishment a Scottish fair work convention, these proposals demonstrate a commitment to driving positive change in the workplace and represent an important contribution to the debate on good work in Scotland.
