The motion

That the Parliament welcomes the planned rollout of smart energy meters to homes and microbusinesses across Scotland by 2020 and the accompanying public information campaign by Smart Energy GB; understands that these meters, which will be installed by the energy suppliers at no additional cost to customers, will be able to easily switch between pre-payment or credit mode and, in future, across different suppliers; believes that they also will bring an end to estimated billing and will enable people to easily monitor the cost of their energy use; considers that the initiative will lead to a more efficient energy network, as energy generation will be better matched to consumer demand and that this will be a platform for future innovation in smart technology, and believes that they will play an important part in Scotland’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions and fuel poverty, are a much-needed upgrade to Scotland’s energy infrastructure and will lead to significant benefits for energy consumers.
