Glasgow Universities Help Prove a Theory by Albert Einstein

That the Parliament congratulates the Scottish scientists who have helped to prove a theory by Albert Einstein, which could alter the way the universe is understood; understands that the physicists have been able to observe gravitational waves for the first time; notes that the discovery was made in the USA using technology developed at the universities of Glasgow, Strathclyde and the West of Scotland; considers that this work could help scientists learn more about the early universe and that it establishes the first direct evidence of black holes, which are cosmic bodies that have such powerful gravity, even light is unable to escape them; understands that Albert Einstein predicted gravitational waves more than 100 years ago in his theory of general relativity however, until now, these were undetectable by scientists; believes that University of Glasgow physicists, who have been working on proving the existence of gravitational waves for around 50 years, developed a crucial part of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory sensors, and congratulates the Scottish scientists who played a role in what it considers this historic development.
