Congratulations to Samaritans and Network Rail
The motion
That the Parliament congratulates Samaritans, Network Rail and the wider rail industry on the campaign, We Don’t Just Hear You, We Listen, which is launched on 23 February 2016 and will feature across the railway network in Scotland and the rest of the UK; understands that, in January 2010, Network Rail formed a partnership with Samaritans to reduce the number of suicides on the railways and to improve the support available for people affected by them; is encouraged by the news that the partnership has since developed into an industry-wide programme, which is funded by Network Rail on behalf of the rail industry and supported by UK train operating companies and the British Transport Police; commends the efforts of railway staff across the UK, who, thanks to what it understands has been specialist training from Samaritans, have prevented more than 450 people from harming themselves on the rail network since April 2015; believes that this new initiative will help encourage those most at risk to seek help when they are struggling to cope and encourage them to call Samaritans’ free helpline number, 116 123, and welcomes both the campaign and the commitment to reduce the impact that suicide has on thousands of families across Scotland.
