GMB Calls for Government Investment in North Sea Decommissioning
The motion
That the Parliament welcomes the publication of the report commissioned by GMB Scotland, Status Capacity and Capability of North Sea Decommissioning Facilities; notes its warning that UK taxpayers could be liable for the significant share of 50 to 75% of North Sea decommissioning costs of potentially £100 billion over the next 40 years, without any commensurate share of the jobs that will be created as the pace of decommissioning quickens; supports the call from the union for the UK and Scottish governments to work together to provide an urgent investment fund that should be aimed at getting Scotland's ports and fabrication yards "decommissioning ready", and believes that, to ensure that Scotland's workers neither lose out on decommissioning jobs nor witness the work going overseas, the time to act is now.
