Unacceptable Funding Cuts to Glasgow

That the Parliament condemns what it considers the severe cuts handed down to Glasgow City Council by the Scottish Government since 2007; further considers that Glasgow is the powerhouse of the Scottish economy; understands that, over the last six years, Glasgow has been forced to make savings of over £270 million as a direct result of what is seen as an unfair and unjust financial settlement from the Scottish Government; is deeply concerned that the current financial forecast estimates savings of £180 million just to retain services at their current levels; is disappointed with what it sees as the lacklustre leadership of the council leader, Susan Aitken, and senior SNP councillors, who it considers have failed to make any representations for additional funding to address the funding shortfall; understands that the SNP-minority administration was elected on a promise to establish a constructive relationship with the Scottish Government that gets results for Glasgow, however considers that a potential £180 million in savings over the next three years and a failure to take any steps to secure additional and fair funding is detrimental to the city of Glasgow and reneges on promises made by SNP councillors; values the vital services that Glasgow City Council, and all local authorities, deliver on a daily basis, which it considers are crucial in the fight against poverty and inequality; believes that Glasgow deserves a leadership team strong enough to stand up to the SNP administration in Edinburgh to fight Glasgow’s corner; supports calls for Glasgow to receive fair funding, and urges Scottish Government Ministers to reflect urgently and to properly resource Glasgow and all local authorities across Scotland.
