The Bigton Community Shop
The motion
That the Parliament congratulates the Bigton Community Shop, which has been shortlisted for a prize in the Plunkett Foundation’s Rural Community Ownership Awards; notes that these awards celebrate the work that community businesses do to support rural areas; recognises that Rick Nickerson, who led the formation of a new management committee to bring the shop under community ownership in 2012, has been nominated in the People’s Choice category, which is awarded to a person who has been recognised as having made an outstanding effort; understands that the judges were impressed by Rick's ability to rally the community in saving the shop and highlighted his leadership skills in chairing the management committee; acknowledges that the shop, which employs three part-time adults, three young people and runs with the support of a number of volunteers, is dementia-friendly and is working towards having autism-friendly status; looks forward to the awards ceremony on 5 December 2018, and wishes the shop continued success.
