Vital Funding Cut for Shopmobility West Lothian

Lodged by Angela Constance (Scottish National Party) Standard Motion 15 supporters

The motion

That the Parliament considers West Lothian Council’s decision to cut its annual funding of £39,000 to West Lothian Shopmobility as short-sighted; understands that this news was a shock to the volunteers and service users of this hard-working community voluntary organisation; acknowledges that the charity has received financial support from the council since 1996; notes that it helps disabled people in Livingston to be more independent by assisting with their shopping; believes that the decision could make hundreds of people dependent on others to help them carry out everyday tasks and that those who do not have a support network in place could risk social isolation; considers that it will also have an adverse effect on shops and businesses in the community, and implores the council to urgently reconsider their decision to help save what it sees as this vital service.
