The motion

That the Parliament notes that 2019 marks the 20th anniversary of the death of the former miner and NUM Vice President, Michael “Mick” McGahey; notes Mick’s very influential role in the Scottish trade union movement and the respect in which he he was held by people across Scottish society; understands that he played a key role from the late 1960s and through the 1970s in convincing the STUC to put its support behind the campaign for a Scottish Parliament and that he made a huge contribution during the 1984-85 miners' strike; acknowledges his lifelong commitment to class politics and socialism and his membership of the Communist Party; understands that his ashes are scattered in the foundations of the Parliament, underneath the debating chamber, and believes that this is a fitting resting place for a man whose the life was committed to pursuing equality, justice and dignity for all.
