CPR Training in Dumfries and Galloway

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates Dumfries and Galloway Council on its decision to introduce potentially lifesaving CPR training for every secondary school pupil; recognises that this decision has been taken in response to poor out-of-hospital cardiac arrest survival rates in Dumfries and Galloway and throughout Scotland generally, with only one in 12 people expecting to survive a cardiac arrest; notes that providing all secondary school pupils with these lifesaving skills follows international best practice, with Denmark, Norway and Seattle having all experienced improved cardiac arrest survival rates after equipping young people with CPR training; understands that this decision sees Dumfries and Galloway Council join 22 other local authorities in the country in making this pledge, and acknowledges that, if the nine remaining councils were to make a similar commitment, Scotland would see approximately 50,000 young people trained in potentially lifesaving CPR every year.
