Removing Barriers to Help 1,000 Children Take up Golf
The motion
That the Parliament recognises Removing Barriers, which is a partnership between CalMac and Gourock Golf Club (GGC) that aims to support 1,000 primary schoolchildren in taking up golf, including by easing any financial burden that might prevent them from doing so; notes that the GGC development coach, Andy Newman, with support from Inverclyde Active Schools and the club's professional, Derek Watters, plan to take golf to the children through 2019 by promoting the benefits of the sport; believes that this is a fantastic opportunity to encourage young people to get active; hopes that other clubs in Inverclyde and across Scotland will make efforts to promote the game to young people; believes that golf, which emerged in 15th century Scotland, will take centre stage in the country when the Solheim Cup is played at Gleneagles in September; understands that this will be the country's biggest sporting event this year, and wishes CalMac and the GGC every success with the initiative.
