The motion

That the Parliament congratulates the Shetlander, Geordie Mainland, on being awarded the Légion d’honneur, France’s highest military and civilian honour, in recognition of his service during the Second World War; notes that Geordie was presented with his medal in Lerwick by the French Consul of Scotland on behalf of President Emmanuel Macron; understands that Geordie was part of a small secret naval command that had the dangerous job of surveying Normandy beaches in small wooden boats under the cover of darkness ahead of the D-Day landings in 1944, and which escorted the Allied assault on D-Day itself; recognises that the men were given a 50/50 chance of survival, having to cross the Channel minefields and on a few occasions coming close to being spotted by the German fleet and being hit by enemy fire; considers that the award is thoroughly deserved; pays tribute to Geordie’s bravery and service, and wishes him all the best for the future.
