Paid Domestic Abuse Leave in South Ayrshire
The motion
That the Parliament congratulates South Ayrshire Council on being the first Scottish local authority to introduce paid leave for victims of domestic abuse; considers that this policy, unanimously agreed across political divides by South Ayrshire councillors, is a welcome and progressive step that will allow women and men who have experienced domestic abuse, cohesive control or violence up to 10 days, paid leave with the option of further time off if needed, to receive the help and support that they may require in order to deal with the abuse they have experienced, which may include making arrangements for alternative accommodation and legal advice; further considers that this policy has led the way, not only in Scotland, but also across Europe, and encourages other Scottish local authorities to follow suit and adopt a policy that allows victims of domestic abuse a period of paid leave, which it believes is a progressive and fair policy in line with the Scottish Government’s values of dignity, fairness and respect.
