North Lanarkshire School Janitor Service
The motion
That the Parliament condemns the decision by North Lanarkshire Council to make cuts to the school janitor service; further understands that the cuts will result in 43 redundancies and that all primary school janitors will be removed from their allocated schools and, instead, be required to cover a number of schools within a cluster area; believes that they will also see a reduction in their responsibilities; considers that the impact of teaching staff being required to cover non-teaching responsibilities will impact on the education of children and young people; further considers this to be in direct conflict with the Scottish Government’s commitment to work to reduce the attainment gap; acknowledges that the council's SNP Group presented a proposal that it believes would have imposed no cuts on the janitorial service, demonstrating that these cuts, in its view, are wholly unnecessary; denounces the Labour administration, with Conservative support, that voted through the £2 million cut; notes what it sees as the huge public outcry in reaction to the cuts through the "Save our Jannies" campaign and planned demonstrations, and calls on North Lanarkshire Council to reverse its decision at the earliest opportunity.
