The motion

That the Parliament welcomes the plan for £60 million to be given to researchers at the Edinburgh Futures Institute, which is based at the former royal infirmary, as one of the five data-driven innovation hubs to receive funding as part of the £1.3 billion Edinburgh and South East Scotland City Region Deal; understands that the funding, which is to be approved by the region deal’s joint committee, aims to see more than 350 organisations work together to plan for the “city of tomorrow” by developing artificial intelligence techniques to help determine future public service provision and transportation networks, transforming the city into the data capital of Europe, while also committing to improving infrastructure and services; believes that Edinburgh is already at the digital forefront, including being home to technology companies such as CodeBase and Skyscanner, and has a growing fintech sector, and considers that the challenge ahead will be to harness the revolution in data, digital, and artificial intelligence in ways that will benefit people across the region in order to put data-driven innovation at the heart of improved public services, opportunities, and careers.
