West Lothian Council Hosts Event to Mark Centenary of Women’s Suffrage

That the Parliament welcomes West Lothian Council's recent event to celebrate the centenary of women’s suffrage; understands that the vote was first granted to some women through the 1918 Representation of the People Act; further understands that electoral equality was not fully achieved until 1928; acknowledges that the event, hosted by West Lothian Council, included a performance by St Kentigern’s Academy pupils, in addition to a talk from the former MP, Maria Fyfe; notes that the struggle for women’s suffrage was powered by years of campaigning, demonstrating and education; considers that although, since 1918, there has been significant progress with regards to gender equality, there is still much work to do to achieve full equality both in politics and society, and commends West Lothian Council for marking such an important aspect of history.
