Bereavement Support

The motion

That the Parliament notes the Sue Ryder report, A Better Grief, which suggests that 56% of people in Scotland are scared of saying the wrong thing to someone who has been recently bereaved and that only 40% consider that they know what kind of support to offer; further notes the report, Bereavement Support in Scotland, which the charity published jointly with Hospice UK; acknowledges that this recorded that, although 31% of bereaved people said that they needed support in addition to that from friends and family, just 6% received this; recognises the impact that bereavement has on feelings of loneliness and isolation at what is already an extremely painful time; acknowledges the view that a national conversation is needed so that everyone feels more comfortable talking about death and dying, to allow people and communities to be empowered to better support loved ones, neighbours, friends and colleagues who are dealing with a bereavement, and notes the calls for health and social care partnerships in Glasgow and across the country to be equipped with a range of bereavement support, from the informal to the formal, including a compassionate communities model.
