UK Government's Migration Proposals Damaging to Scotland's Economy

The motion

That the Parliament calls on the UK Government to abandon its current post-Brexit migration proposals that would, it considers, see an end to freedom of movement and set a salary threshold for labour migrants at £30,000; believes that these proposals would have a disproportionate negative impact on Scotland’s economy by sending the working age population into decline and causing serious staff shortages in key sectors; considers that sectors such as textiles, hospitality, sales, seasonal agriculture and vital social care service are most at risk, with almost no jobs qualifying for the £30,000 threshold; acknowledges the recent report from the Expert Advisory Group on Migration and Population, which it understands found that less than 40% of workers in the Aberdeenshire Council area, and less than 30% of workers in the Moray Council area, earn above the £30,000 threshold, limiting jobs in the Banffshire and Buchan Coast constituency; recognises what it sees as the huge benefits that migration brings to Scotland and the valuable contribution that EU nationals have made to communities across the country, and agrees that Scotland’s economy now depends on a fair, tailor-made approach to migration that works for all sectors and regions of Scotland.
