Newtonhill Primary School
The motion
That the Parliament congratulates Newtonhill Primary School on being shortlisted for the 1+2 Languages and Internationalism Award category at the Scottish Education Awards 2019; recognises the hard work and dedication of its teachers in achieving the ambitious target based on the European Union 1+2 model, which aims for pupils to learn two languages in addition to their own mother tongue; understands that, for the pupils, this means they will learn Spanish as a second language (L2) from P1-P7 and get a taste of French for a third language (L3) from P5-P7; notes that this approach has been adopted in many countries in Europe and beyond; acknowledges the importance and value of acquiring language skills as part of a child’s development, and hopes that the children will benefit from learning additional languages for many years to come.
