Reduction in Homelessness in Edinburgh

Lodged by Gordon MacDonald Standard Motion 9 supporters

The motion

That the Parliament welcomes new figures revealing that the number of people presenting as homeless in Edinburgh has fallen in each of the last five years; understands that the number of people presenting as homeless decreased from 4,016 in 2014-15 to 3,188 in 2018-19; appreciates what it considers the commitment from the Scottish Government and the City of Edinburgh Council to not only provide housing, but to address the many issues that can contribute to an individual or family becoming homeless; notes with concern that the City of Edinburgh Council expects the housing situation to become more difficult due to the roll-out of universal credit and welfare reform, and believes that, to eradicate homelessness, there must be a joined-up partnership approach across many sectors.
