Charles Lapworth Plaque

The motion

That the Parliament notes that a plaque has been unveiled in Galashiels to recognise the influential geologist, Charles Lapworth, who lived in the town for 11 years; understands that Lapworth, who stayed in Galashiels from 1864 to 1875, is best known for his faunal analysis of rock beds from the Silurian period, and made innovative use of index fossils, which are used to identify geological periods; acknowledges that the plaque has been affixed to the Old Episcopal School where Lapworth worked as headmaster, and was unveiled by the former president of the Edinburgh Geological Society, Professor Stuart Monro; thanks the Galashiels residents, Malcolm Lindsay and David Adamson, for applying for the plaque as part of Historic Environment Scotland’s Commemorative Plaque Scheme, and hopes that the plaque will inspire Galashiels residents to learn more about Lapworth and his valuable geological work.
