Taiwan Legalises Same-sex Marriage
The motion
That the Parliament applauds Taiwan on being the first country in Asia to legalise same-sex marriage following a vote on 17 May 2019; recognises that policymakers debated three separate bills to legalise same-sex unions, with the most progressive of the three being passed; notes that, after a series of referendums in which the majority of Taiwan maintained that the definition of marriage was the union of a man and woman, Taiwan will now enact a special law for same-sex marriage; considers that there is still some way to go in the fight for equality but that the legislation provides the LGBT+ community with a legal definition, and hopes that the examples of commitment to marriage equality in Taiwan will act as a catalyst to encourage other jurisdictions to reconsider their position on same-sex unions and work towards future LGBTI+ equality.
