Wojtek Day, 25 May
The motion
That the Parliament recognises Wojtek Day, which will fall on 25 May 2019 in honour of Wojtek, the orphaned Syrian brown bear, which was taken in by Polish II Corps soldiers during the Second World War and subsequently drafted into the Polish Army as a soldier, eventually spending his retirement in Edinburgh Zoo; understands that this year is particularly poignant as it is also the 75th anniversary of the battle at Monte Cassino, which Wojtek fought with his regiment, helping to carry crates of artillery; believes that Wojtek, and his memorial in Princes Street Gardens in Edinburgh, is a unique symbol of the historic links between Scotland and Poland, and remembers the sacrifice of those Polish soldiers who fought alongside Wojtek, the orphaned brown bear.
