David Martin's Service as an MEP
The motion
That the Parliament thanks David Martin for his 35 years’ service as a Labour MEP; notes that David was first elected to the European Parliament (EP) in 1984 to represent the Lothians, and from 1999 for all Scotland; congratulates him on having been the UK’s longest serving MEP and the second longest serving member overall; notes that, during his time in the EP, he was the youngest ever leader of the British Labour delegation of MEPs and served as the Vice-President of the EP from 1989 to 2004; celebrates that, during his years of service, he was instrumental in a number of important policy changes and formations, including the 2009 banning of the sale of seal products in the EU, which, it understands, has been widely praised by the World Trade Organization and animal welfare campaigns; understands that David was a key figure in achieving the overwhelmingly pro-Remain vote in Scotland in the 2016 EU referendum and that he has held consistent views regarding the positive role that the UK plays as an EU member state; acknowledges that he was a strong voice in Europe for his constituents across Scotland and remains widely liked across the political spectrum, and wishes David all the very best for the future.
