Hamnavoe Hub Project in Stromness

That the Parliament welcomes confirmation that the Hamnavoe Hub project in Stromness will be going ahead; acknowledges that the project will see locally-produced green electrical power supplied to the MV Hamnavoe while it is docked in Stromness, making it the first large commercial ship shore connection in the UK; notes that the new power supply system is known as "cold ironing" and is expected to reduce fuel consumption by at least 500 tonnes, delivering savings of around £160,000 per year; understands that funding for the project was provided through the European Regional Development Fund, Orkney Islands Council and HITRANS; recognises that the project forms part of a wider push for low-carbon transport in Stromness, including plans to install electric vehicle charging points and provide public use electric bicycles which will contribute to a lower carbon footprint across Orkney as a whole; believes that this is the sort of innovative project that will be needed as part of Scotland’s efforts to address the climate emergency, and wishes all involved every success.
