New Police Protocol for Finding Missing People with Dementia
The motion
That the Parliament welcomes the launch by police in Edinburgh, in conjunction with the Edinburgh Health and Social Care Partnership, of a protocol to help officers in searching for missing people with dementia; understands that the Herbert Protocol is a comprehensive form for those with a loved one or a caring responsibility for someone with dementia who has gone missing, which can assist officers with their investigation; recognises that it originated in Norfolk and is named after a Normandy veteran, George Herbert, who lived with dementia and sadly died in 2011 after he went missing while looking for his childhood home; notes that the police and the council have launched this as part of national Dementia Awareness Week and Scottish Missing Persons Week; acknowledges that the initiative is supported by Alzheimer Scotland and has been welcomed by Scottish Care, and hopes that it will be a useful tool in assisting the police with finding vulnerable older people who have gone missing.
