Dandie Dinmonts Day Out
The motion
That the Parliament commends the recent gathering of over 60 Dandie Dinmont breed dogs and their owners and admirers at the Haining in Selkirk recently; understands that the breed has a strong connection to the wider Borders, taking its name from Sir Walter Scott's novel, Guy Mannering, which included a character by the name of Dandie Dinmont who owned terriers and was said to be based on the Borders farmer, James Davidson, and his dogs, but that, despite a slight resurgence in popularity in recent decades, it remains a rare breed with less than 100 pups born in the UK each year; believes that all Dandie Dinmonts can trace their lineage back to one dog, Old Ginger, whose statue is now a permanent fixture at the Haining; considers that the gathering in 2020 will be a particularly special one as it marks the bicentenary of the death of James Davidson, and celebrates this part of the Borders’ heritage.
