North Uist to Enter the Space Age
The motion
That the Parliament welcomes recently unveiled plans for North Uist to become home to the UK’s first-ever vertical launch commercial spaceport; acknowledges that the Spaceport 1 project is backed by a consortium that includes a range of players from the UK and international space sector and is led by Comhairle nan Eilean Siar; notes that the planned facility will allow rockets to launch vertically to gain access to the sun synchronous and polar orbits, adding an extra dimension to Scotland’s already flourishing space industry, with, it understands, Glasgow already building more small satellites than any other place in Europe; welcomes the economic benefits that the spaceport will bring to the people of North Uist, creating between 50 to 70 jobs, as well as long-term economic benefits; agrees that the space industry in Scotland has considerable potential and appetite for further growth, and considers that the plans for this spaceport are a significant step in Scotland’s bid to be Europe’s leading space nation.
