Ayrshire Earlies Awarded PGI Status

Lodged by Emma Harper Standard Motion 14 supporters

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates the Girvan Early Growers on being awarded Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status by the European Council for its Ayrshire Earlies, which are also known as Ayrshire Tatties; notes that PGI status, of which there are 15 registered in Scotland, including Arbroath Smokies and Ayrshire Dunlop Cheese, means that the product cannot be replicated by other growers and producers and provides legal and statutory protection; acknowledges that such products are world-renowned for their provenance, taste and quality; understands that, to achieve this status, the Girvan Early Growers put a huge amount of work to prove the product's worthiness; notes what it sees as calls from producers, in Scotland and across the whole of the UK, to ensure that such world class products remain protected as the UK leaves the EU, and wishes the Girvan Early Growers every success with future harvests.
