North East Foodbanks Experience Summer Spike

That the Parliament acknowledges the increase in demand for emergency food packages in the north east over the summer period; understands that the local charity, CFINE, has been giving out over 100 food parcels daily; considers that foodbanks alone will not eliminate food insecurity and recognises the importance of building resilience, promoting self-esteem and encouraging independence in allowing people in poverty to take back control of their lives; appreciates the positive impact of the innovative Woodside Pantry in building community strength and providing a dignified alternative to foodbanks, and regrets the vital role that foodbanks are forced to play in supporting vulnerable groups in today’s society as a consequence, it considers, of an austerity agenda and welfare reform.
