The motion

That the Parliament congratulates University Hospital Wishaw on being shortlisted as a finalist in Scotland’s Dementia Awards in the Best Hospital Care Initiative category for its project, Styles and Smiles, which opened in April 2019 and provides free hair styling and barbering services to people the condition, offering them the opportunity for social interaction and the ability to maintain a routine that incorporates dates, days and times; recognises that dementia is one of the biggest health and social care challenges faced by society, with around 90,000 people living with it in Scotland; notes that an estimated 20,000 people will be diagnosed with the condition by 2020; commends the efforts of New College Lanarkshire lecturers and students who have been running the salon for three days per week during term time, and volunteering their time over the summer to ensure that it continues to operate, and wishes them best of luck for the awards, which celebrate the people and projects working to improve care and support for people living with dementia and their families throughout communities and across the health, social care and education sectors, and will take place on 18 September 2019.
